Four more children died of measles-like symptoms across the country in the 24 hours until 8:00am on Saturday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
With the latest fatalities, the total number of deaths from suspected measles and measles-like symptoms has risen to 235 since mid-March this year, including 49 confirmed measles deaths, a DGHS bulletin said.
During the same period, 72 new confirmed measles cases were reported, along with 1,024 cases showing measles-like symptoms.
Since mid-March, a total of 39,325 suspected measles cases have been recorded, alongside 5,218 confirmed infections, the bulletin added.
Health officials said that 26,911 patients required hospitalisation, of whom 23,225 have already returned home after recovery.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that affects people of all ages and remains one of the leading causes of death among young children globally.
Although the disease is often mild or moderately severe, it can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, ear infections, brain inflammation (encephalitis), blindness and death.
Bangladesh had made significant progress towards eliminating measles before the current outbreak.
However, a nationwide vaccine shortage during 2024-2025 increased the number of susceptible children, contributing to the resurgence, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
