The telecom regulator has decided to make a fresh attempt to appoint auditors to inspect information systems of Airtel Bangladesh Ltd, which has merged with Robi Axiata.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) at its recent meeting took the decision to invite fresh expression of interest (EoI) for the appointment of an auditor.

The commission had decided seven years ago to audit the mobile operators, including the out-of-operation Citycell.

According to the decision, the auditor will examine the information systems of Airtel Bangladesh from December 20, 2005 to November 15, 2016, The BTRC has so far made several attempts to audit Airtel in accordance with another decision in 2019.

In December 2017, the commission had also invited a bid seeking EoI to conduct financial and technical inspections of the Banglalink and Airtel.

Under the fresh move, the commission would now float fresh bids seeking EoI from competent firms and publish terms of reference (ToR) or scope of service, a senior BTRC official told the FE.

The audit team will include one information system auditor expert, three financial consultants, and one database expert, according to the BTRC.

In August last year, BTRC began auditing another operator Banglalink which is yet to be completed.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Act allows the commission to run such auditing of the mobile phone operators.

In September 2015, the BTRC decided to audit all the five private mobile phone operators.

In October of the same year, it appointed audit firm Toha Khan Zaman & Co for auditing Grameenphone.

In March 2016, Masih Muhith Haque & Co was appointed to conduct the information system audit of Robi Axiata.
