A twenty-one-strong friendship group has been launched in the European Parliament to focus on Bangladesh in the run up to parliamentary elections scheduled for next year, reports UNB.
Nirj Deva, Conservative MEP for the Southeast of England, and Robert Evans, Labour MEP for London, launched the 'Friends of Bangladesh' in the European Parliament at an inauguration dinner held at the official resi dence of AHM Moniruzzaman, ambassador of Bangladesh to the EU, in Brussels on June 6.
Members from the EPP, ALDE and PES were present at the launching ceremony, according to a message received in Dhaka Sunday.
The group will also work on an ongoing basis for establishing relationships with the people and government of Bangladesh.
Introducing the group, Co-chair Robert Evans, who also chairs the South Asia delegation of the European Parliament, said that the European Parliament takes "keen interest in the important developments taking place in Bangladesh and would support its people in their endeavour for political stability and good governance".
"I believe the current political situation in Bangladesh is a transitional phase towards a permanent and lasting democratic process. I am looking forward to visiting the country in the course of the run up to the general election", he added.
