Eid festival bonus to garment workers will be paid by September 28 while the wages for the month of September will be disbursed by October 2, according to a decision made Sunday.
The decision came at the 26th Crisis Management Core Committee meeting presided over by State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu at the secretariat.
"Considering the festival vacation, owners have assured us of paying the festival allowance by September 28 and September's wages by October 02," the minister said after the meeting.
Replying to a question, the minister said the laid-off Tuba Group workers would get 'something' before the Eid-ul-Azha festival.
He wouldn't elaborate on what that 'something' might bring the out-of-job workers.
"Discussion is going on in this regard, but what they will get is yet to be decided," the minister said.
The advance measure is being taken as the export industry has often witnessed labour unrest in the run-up to festivals when owners have failed to clear the pays.
The Eid holiday is supposed to fall between October 5 and 7 while Oct 4 is a holiday for the largest Hindu festival in the country--Durga Puja.
Labour Secretary Mikail Shipar, the Inspector-General of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, BGMEA acting President Md Shahidullah Azim and former vice-president Siddiqur Rahman, BKMEA former vice-president Md Hatem, Industrial Police Director-General Abdus Salam and labour leader Sirajul Islam Rony were among others present at the meeting.
