The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 63.8 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.48 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University, report agencies.

In its latest update on Wednesday, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 63,839,023 and 1,480,516, respectively.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 13,721,304 and 270,645, respectively, according to the CSSE.

Nearly 37,000 Americans died of COVID-19 in November, the most in any month since the dark early days of the pandemic.

Amid the resurgence, states have begun reopening field hospitals to handle an influx of patients that is pushing health care systems - and their workers - to the breaking point. Hospitals are bringing in mobile morgues. And funerals are being live streamed or performed as drive-by affairs.
