The government has set up a high-powered committee comprising the country's leading business personalities aiming to reform the existing trade associations, officials have said.

The committee has been asked to put forward necessary recommendations so that well-timed reforms of the existing trade organisations could be made, they added.

Salman F Rahman, former president of the country's apex body, is the convener of the10-member committee.

Former FBCCI presidents Mahbubur Rahman, Yussuf Abdullah Harun, Mir Nasir Hossain, Annisul Huq, AK Azad and Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, incumbent president Abdul Matlub Ahmad and its first vice-president Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin are the members of the committee.

The committee will submit a report to the Ministry of Commerce (MoC) and put forward necessary recommendations within the next three months, according to the MoC.

Besides, it will give advice to the country's trade bodies in case of stabilising the market prices.

The FBCCI will provide all kinds of institutional assistance to the committee.

The MoC issued a circular on April 05, 2016 in this regard.

"A committee has been formed recently that will submit a report along with recommendations within the next three months," senior secretary of the MOC Hedayetullah Al Mamoon told the FE on Tuesday.

Necessary steps will be taken with a view to updating the existing trade bodies as per the committee's recommendations, he added.

The MoC has taken initiative to increase the capacity of FBCCI and its member organisations across the country, a high official of the ministry said.

Presently, there are 476 trade organisations under the FBCCI. Of these, some 71 are chambers, 8.0 women chambers, 20 joint chambers and 377 associations, according to the FBCCI data.

The apex trade body is the premier umbrella organisation for businesspeople. It works to help and stimulate investment, development of trade, commerce, industry, agriculture, tourism, human resources and communication sectors in the country, sources concerned said.

Besides, the FBCCI plays a pivotal role in consultative and advisory capacity, safeguarding the interests of the private sector. So, it is urgently needed to increase the capacity of the FBCCI and its affiliated organisations, they also said.

"Presently, the scope of the FBCCI has widened. So, we want to increase the capacity of affiliated chambers, joint chambers and associations of the trade body," a competent source said.

The FBCCI was established in 1973 under Trade Organisation Ordinance, 1961 and Companies Act, 1913.

FBCCI President Abdul Matlub Ahmad could not be reached for his comments despite several attempts over phone.
