The government has allowed some 37 traders to export 1200 tonnes of hilsha to India ahead of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community.

Hilsha, which is widely considered as a delicacy particularly in Bangladesh and West Bengal, holds a deep cultural significance, especially during the Durga Puja festival.

The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) on Tuesday gave special permission to the trading firms following their recent appeal to this effect, official sources said.

The minimum export price of hilsha has been fixed at U$12.50 per kilogram.

Each of the trading firms has been allowed to export 20 to 50 tonness of hilsa to India, with the export timeframe remaining valid from September 16 to October 05, 2025 according to the MoC order.

The traders concerned will have to comply with the country's existing Export Policy-2024-27 accordingly while exporting the fish, it said, adding that the respective customs authorities must conduct a thorough physical examination on the export consignments.

The traders have been asked to follow the Export Policy-2021-24 while the customs authorities concerned will verify exportable consignments by the ASYCUDA World System to prevent its shipments beyond the permissible limits.
