Govt bans raw jute export as uncut BTR, BWR

The government has banned export of raw jute in the name of uncut BTR and BWR on Thursday.
According to Section 13 of Jute Law 2017, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute banned export of Bangla Tossa Rejection (BTR) and Bangla White Rejection (BWR) that will continue until further notice.
A circular, issued by the ministry on the day, also said the decision will be implemented immediately.
When contacted, sector insiders said they have been demanding imposition of ban on export of these two types of raw jute since long, as a section of exporters are gaining profit by exporting such uncut jute.
But the country is losing its export earnings, as processed raw jute adds value significantly.
Bangladesh Jute Mills Association (BJMA) Secretary Abdul Barik Khan said on an average 1.0-1.1 million bales of raw jute are exported each year from Bangladesh, and minimum 60 per cent of the raw jute is exported as uncut.
