Grafts by ex-army, police chiefs

Govt can't avoid responsibility, says BNP

FE REPORT | May 25, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Friday that the government could not avoid responsibility for the corruption committed by former army and police chiefs.

BNP vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu made the comments at a programme in front of the National Press Club in the city.

The event was held demanding immediate release of all the detained party leaders, including BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, and withdrawal of the cases filed against party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

Mr Dudu alleged that former army chief Gen (retd) Aziz Ahmed and former police chief Benazir Ahmed played instrumental role in helping the government overcome the election situation in 2018.

He said that the government is now in trouble.

Mr Dudu also said that the comment on white skin made by the Prime Minister (on Thursday) was dangerous.

He asked the premier to explain to whom she actually mean (about white skin)?

He said, "Those who are involved in detaining Begum Khaleda Zia in false cases must stand in the dock of the people's court."

Mr Dudu, who is also a former president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, reiterated his party's demand that the government resign and hold a free, fair and participatory election to return power to the people.

"We (the opponents) must be united for the sake of the country," he said, adding that there is no alternative for the people to take to the streets to get rid of the problems the country is now facing.

President of Gonotabtra Forum VP Ibrahim presided over the event attended by BNP organising secretary Emran Saleh Prince and member of the party's executive committee Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah.
