The present government is putting special emphasis on ensuring water supply and sanitation for all as it is linked with public health, poverty alleviation and public welfare, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak said Wednesday.

"We will take necessary measures to ensure water supply and sanitation facility in every household with other basic needs of the people," he said while addressing a workshop at RDEC-LGED Building at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the city.

The Policy Support Unit (PSU) of Local Government Division under Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives organised the workshop styled 'Inception Workshop on Sector Development Programme Review and Revision' to know the present situation of the Sector Development Programme (SDP) and its future and above all its past and future course of actions.

SDP for the water and sanitation sector in Bangladesh was prepared in 2005 and was approved by the government in 2006. It provided a strategy and a detailed plan for development in both sectors for a period of 10 years (2005-2015).

The overall objective of revised SDP is to establish an operational SDP including Sector Investment Plan (SIP) to be owned and managed by the government of Bangladesh and agreed by the donors, NGOs and other stakeholders through an eventual Sector Wide Approach, said Tanveer Ahsan, head of Water and Environment at DevCon, a consultancy firm, who presented the inception report.

He said: "The question of revision has come up to incorporate the government's new commitments and targets, ensure participation of all stakeholders, prepare operational sector investment plan and update and make necessary adjustments to meet the challenges and opportunities."

The present grand alliance government in its election manifesto had announced ensuring of water supply for all by 2011 and sanitation by 2013.
