The government is planning to form a separate pay-scale for the scientists to bring back the country's outstanding researchers who left the country in the absence of opportunities.
"The concerned ministry already took the initiative to formulate a fresh salary-structure immediately for the scientists," said Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu while speaking at a roundtable as chief guest.
Catalyst, a global NGO platform working here to promote agricultural sector, organised the discussion on 'Pro-poor agriculture: role of media and academia' at the Senate Building of Dhaka University (DU) Saturday.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique addressed the event as special guest. Prof Dr Md Golam Rahman of the DU Mass Communication and Journalism department presided over the programme while noted agriculture personality Shykh Siraj presented a keynote paper.
The information minister said unfortunately, allocation for the research was very poor.
Mr Inu also stressed the need for more subsidy for development of the agriculture sector as more than 75 per cent citizens anyhow depend on the farming sector.
"The government should intensely review the budgetary allocation for the agricultural sector which always remains neglected", he noted.
"Unplanned import and export of the farming goods often create volatility in the market depriving the marginal cultivators", he said.
The minister laid emphasis on a bold role of mass media to help educate the community people through need-based information.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof Siddique called upon the government to increase the existing allocation and extend policy support for the sustainable development of the sector.
Shykh Siraj presented his 15-point recommendation including instalment of separate television and radio stations for broadcasting agricultural programmes.
He also stressed more study and research based on their demand and ensuring smooth flow of information including regular market needs and price of certain commodities.
