Govt raises gas meter rent irrationally: BNP

FE REPORT | February 01, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) criticised on Wednesday the government for doubling gas-meter rent.

Senior joint secretary-general of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made the criticism at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office in the capital.

He said, "If the government had been voted to power by the people, they (government) would have never increased the gas meter rent."

He also said that the government increased the gas meter rent irrationally.

"The government has increased the gas meter rent two times as a punishment to the people meted out from election held on January 7, 2024. The government has exposed its anti-people character by doubling the meter rent, setting an example of looting spree," he maintained.

Mr Rizvi alleged that the government is suppressing people's movement by using state forces.

"The government is depleting state coffers for bearing market syndicate costs," he said.

"The Awami League ministers should be awarded for talking lies," he said. He raised a question to the general secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL) saying misappropriation of how much billions of taka could be treated as corruption?

"AL leader Obaidul Quader's speech proved that corruption is being sponsored by the state," he commented.

Mr Rizvi said the cases filed against BNP leaders were false and fabricated which has been reflected by the speech of AL leader Shahjahan Omar.
