Govt seeks ADB finance for Dhaka-Ctg expressway study

The government has sought funds from Asian Development Bank (ADB) for feasibility study on the construction of an elevated expressway from Dhaka to Chittagong.
Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain made the request when a three-member ADB delegation met with him at his office Tuesday.
The minister urged the delegation to extend financial support to the feasibility study of the vital corridor in the country.
Recalling various contributions of the organisation to Bangladesh's development, he said the development partner is playing an important role in strengthening the road communication of the country.
The Director General of ADB's South Asia Department, Sultan Hafeez Rahman, who led the delegation, said their cooperation would continue in the future as his organisation is working with Bangladesh to develop its road communications.
He mentioned that they had approved US$ 615 million for the Padma Bridge project.
The communications minister also sought financial help for building a railway bridge over Jamuna river between Bahadurabad and Phulchharighat in order to extend the railway network from Rangpur to Dhaka.
Meanwhile, the authorities have started feasibility study for setting up the railway bridge at the site.
It may be mentioned that the renovation work of Bangladesh Railway is going on in cooperation with ADB.
The communication minister also hoped that ADB would extend financial aid for another feasibility study to expand the country's railway network from Dhaka to Mawa; Dohazari to Cox`s Bazar; Bhanga to Barisal, and Tungipara to Mongla Port.
The Secretary, Roads and Railways Division, Mozammel Haque Khan, Roads and Highways Department (RHD) chief engineer M Sahabuddin, Director General of Bangladesh Railway Touhidul Anwar Chowdhury and Project Director of Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project Eng Rafiqul Islam were also present.
