FE Report
The caretaker government is set to initiate formal talks with Myanmar for importing natural gas to meet the country's growing demand for both domestic and industrial use.
"A high-powered delegation from Myanmar will visit Bangladesh August next to discuss the issue of gas sale," Energy and Power Adviser Tapan Chowdhury told the FE Tuesday.
The adviser earlier asked the Bangladesh ambassador in Yangon to initiate talks with the concerned authorities there to facilitate import of natural gas from Myanmar.
He said the government is weighing every option to enhance gas supply to meet the growing local demands.
According to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) the country will need a further 24 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas in the next 18 years up to 2025 to achieve annual economic growth at seven per cent.
The country's proven reserve of 8.39 TCF gas is set to exhaust by 2011. If proven and probable reserves of around 14.4 TCF are taken together, the country's gas stock will be emptied by 2015, the report pointed out.
After 2015, the country will require new reserves to meet the growing demand.
To ensure the availability of gas to meet the future demand, the country will have to intensify exploration activities by 2010, the EMRD under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) stressed.
