Govt to buy Boro rice at Tk 25, paddy at Tk 17 per kg

The government will start buying a kilogramme of Boro rice at Tk 25 and paddy at Tk 17 from May as part of its move to ensure food security, the food minister said Tuesday.
"Our target is to help the country stave off any future crisis such as flood or cyclone," said Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzak.
The minister was speaking at a press briefing after a meeting of Food Planning and Monitoring Committee at the secretariat, which was attended by Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Agriculture Minister Motia Chowdhury and Commerce Minister Faruk Khan.
Secretaries of cabinet division and finance, food and disaster management and relief ministries were present at the meeting.
The food minister said the committee has unanimously decided to buy 1.2 million (12 lakh) tonnes of Boro crops, of which 0. 15 million tonnes would be paddy and 1.10 million tonnes rice.
The prices set by the committee mean farmers will profit 15.47 per cent for rice and 27.53 per cent for paddy as the government has estimated the production cost of rice at Tk 21.65 and paddy at Tk 13.33, said Mr Razzak.
