Govt working to ensure BD citizens’ safety in Libya

FE Report | April 23, 2019 00:00:00

The government is working to ensure necessary safety measures for some 5,000 Bangladeshis, who are at risk of being exposed to violence in the conflict-hit Tripoli and its adjacent areas in Libya.

Officials said if necessary, they will arrange repatriation of the Bangladeshis staying in the region.

An inter-ministerial meeting, chaired by Rownaq Jahan, Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment, reviewed the latest situation faced by Bangladeshi nationals in the Middle-East country. The meeting was held at the Probashi Kallyan Bhaban in the city on Sunday.

Al-Jazeera reported on the day that heavy clashes broke out in the southern districts of the Libyan capital, Tripoli. The forces loyal to the country's UN-recognised government launched a counterattack to repel the fighters allied to renegade General Khalifa Haftar.

Residents of the city said they could hear sustained rocket and artillery fire in several districts of Tripoli on Saturday, after several days of stalemate, the report mentioned.

The officials said Bangladeshi workers in Tripoli and other nearby areas have been requested to register themselves with Bangladesh Embassy there to receive all kinds of cooperation.

According to Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, nearly 20,000 Bangladeshis are currently living in Libya.

The expatriates welfare secretary said if necessary, they will repatriate and rehabilitate the Bangladeshis staying in Libya.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has offered its cooperation to the government to repatriate the Bangladeshis from Libya any time.

The officials further said about 500 Bangladeshis are stranded in two locations of Libya amid fighting between the UN-backed Libyan government and the Libyan National Army.

The embassy has a helpline number (+218-21-4911198-99), which is always ready to rescue the people who will contact, they said.

For online registration, Bangladeshis are asked to use the following website: http://bangladeshembassylibya.com/registration.html.

Besides, the registration forms can be downloaded and be sent to the embassy through email [email protected], or facebook messenger of the embassy, http://bangladeshembassylibya.com/images/registration.pdf.
