CHATTOGRAM, Jun 05: The captain of a foreign vessel is yet to be rescued despite hectic efforts to trace him in the Karnaphuli.

Marcopolos Vesilius (57), captain of the Cyprus flag carrying vessel MV Ivania, went missing in the river around 9:00 pm on Monday.

He slipped into the river while going down by the ship's rope ladder.

A senior official of the Chittagong Port Authority said members of Navy, Coast Guard and Port Security are searching for him in and around the port.

But they are yet to find any trace of the captain, he added.

Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Md Omar Faruq told the FE at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, "We're yet to trace the missing Greek captain.

"The joint rescue drive by Navy, Coast Guard and Port Security personnel in the Karnaphuli is still going on."

The ship, loaded with steel pipes and machinery, arrived in the port on Monday afternoon from China.

It was docked at jetty number seven of the port.

Immediately after the incident, the crew of the vessel dropped rope for the captain's salvage but to no avail.

Mr Vesilius could not catch hold of it due to strong current during low tide in the river, sources said.
