The BNP-led 20-party Alliance once again extended its countrywide hartal by another 48 hours alongside the non-stop blockade that crossed 50th day with arson attacks, blasts and arrests.
A press release, issued by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) joint secretary general Salah Uddin Ahmed on Tuesday said the fresh spell of hartal will come into effect from 6:00 am Wednesday.
According to the statement, the general strike will be observed all over the country, protesting what it said killing the alliance leaders and activists in the name of crossfire, their wholesale arrest, filing false cases against them, repression on journalists, media censorship and the government interference in judiciary as well as for restoring people's voting rights and democracy.
It also said the shutdown, enforced by the alliance since January 6, will also go on along with the blockade.
Meanwhile, at least five people were injured in hand-bomb explosions by 'pro-blockade activists' in Gulistan and Fakirerpul areas in the capital on the day.
Police said a bomb was exploded in Fakirerpul area at about 8:00 am that left a youth named Alamgir (26) injured.
Within two hours of the explosion, unknown pickets blast three bombs at Bangabazar in Gulistan area, leaving four people - Rasel (30), Kakon (32), Anwar Hossain (52) and Khandaker Anu (22) - wounded. They were immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment.
