CHATTOGRAM, Sept 18: A case has been filed in Chattogram against 18 persons, including three former chief election commissioners and deposed premier Sheikh Hasina, on charge of orchestrating fake polls.
The parliamentary elections were held in 2014, 2018 and 2024.
Md Ekramul Karim, a 70-year-old Chawkbazar resident and ex-general secretary of the Chattogram City unit of BNP, filed the complaint with the Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Wednesday.
Ex-CEC Kazi Raqibuddin Ahmad and his commissioners Abu Hafiz, Md Javed Ali, Md Abdul Mubarak and Md Shahnewaz have been accused of holding the questionable election in 2014.
Former CEC KM Nurul Huda and his commissioners Rafiqul Islam, Kavita Khanam and Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury, and EC secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed have been sued for rigging the 2018 election.
Again, ex-CEC Kazi Habibul Awal and his commissioners Ahsan Habib Khan, Begum Rasheda Sultana, Md Alamgir and Md Anisur Rahman, and EC secretary Jahangir Alam have been blamed for staging the 2024 election.
Hasina has been accused as the leader of the fake elections, while her aide Obaidul Quader named as a "fake national parliament member".
According to the case statement, the elections were held without public participation and led to the declaration of unelected members of parliament.
The court ordered to set up an investigation with a report expected in weeks.
Mr Karim alleged that the public was deprived of their voting right during those elections, and unelected individuals were placed in positions of power.
The plaintiff's lawyer, advocate Kofil Uddin, confirmed the filing of the case.
He said the case was filed based on the repeated holding of "fake parliamentary elections" and the manipulation of electoral outcomes to declare non-elected individuals as members of parliament.
The lawyer said the court took cognisance of the case and instructed a police officer of assistant commissioner rank to investigate it and take legal action.
Meanwhile, a case was filed on Wednesday against 163 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, allegedly for attempting to murder a private company deliveryman during the recent anti-discrimination student movement.
The other prominent accused in the case are- Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, Kamal Ahmed Mazumder and Gazi Mesbaul Hossain Bacchu.
Victim Shimul Ahmed filed the complaint himself at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman.

According to the case documents, Shimul joined anti-discrimination student movement on July 19. Around 5pm on that day, he got shot on the thigh, making him cripple for life.
