July 20, 2007 00:00:00

Detained Awami League president Sheikh Hasina has said that the notice issued upon her to submit wealth statement is full of mistakes, but her claim was dismissed by the Anti-Corruption Commission, reports UNB
According to sources, Hasina in her handwritten letter to ACC said the notices were only meant for males as the notice issued to her states, "You are directed to submit the statement of wealth standing in the name of self, your wife and dependants."
And she returned the notice without accepting it on Wednesday.
In the letter, Hasina said: "I was the Prime Minister of the country. Doesn't the ACC know if I am a male or a female? I've been asked to submit wealth statement of my wife, but who will be my wife? It could have been considered if the words husband/wife were put in place of wife."
She, however, received the notice through the Prisons authority yesterday (Thursday) at 5:30 pm, according to an official source.
"The Commission received a 13-line letter from former honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through the Prisons authority. In the letter, she stated that the (ACC) notice is full of mistakes," ACC secretary Mokhles ur Rahman said at the regular briefing.
About the ACC position on Hasina's claim, he said: "Actually, after scrutiny of the notice by the Commission, it was found that the notice has been issued in accordance with the law, the notice is correct and there is no mistake anywhere."
The ACC secretary said if the notice recipient is male, he will have to provide details of his wife's wealth and in case of female, she will have give wealth information of her husband.
"The Commission hopes she (Hasina) will submit her wealth statement in due time," he added.
Asked if the deadline for her would begin from Wednesday, he said her time would be counted from Wednesday. "She will have seven working days for submitting her wealth statement. If asked, she will get another seven working days to comply with the (ACC) directive. It's the normal process."
On Hasina's claim, ACC deputy director Mobara Khanam, who signed the notice, said: "Same notices have been issued to everybody else…There is not a single wrong word in that. What she said is her opinion. There was no breach of law."
To a question about issuing notices to BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Dhaka City Corporation mayor Sadek Hossain Khoka and Jamaat ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, the ACC secretary said it is an ongoing process and notices would be issue to those suspected. "The process will continue."
Replying to a question, he informed that the names of the above-mentioned individuals are not yet on any list of the Commission.
