CHATTOGRAM, Sept 15: A case has been filed in Chattogram over disparaging remark made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
The case, which names Sheikh Hasina as the sole accused, was filed in the First Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Deb's court on Sunday by Saurabh Priya Pal, the former vice-president of Nagar Chhatra Dal, a student wing of the BNP.
The case stems from a statement made by Sheikh Hasina before the inauguration of the Padma Bridge on May 18, 2022.
In a speech, she (Sheikh Hasina) allegedly remarked that Begum Khaleda Zia should be "thrown" from the bridge, and that Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus should be "dipped" into the Padma River.
Confirming the filing of the case, Advocate Rezaul Islam, plaintiff's lawyer said that the court has taken cognizance of the case and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct an inquiry.
The investigation is to be led by an officer of the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police or Assistant Superintendent of Police, with a report to be submitted within 30 days.
