BNP's joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed has been missing for two days after allegedly picked up by plain-clothed police at 10:30 pm on Tuesday from a house in the capital.
His wife and former BNP MP Hasina Ahmed alleged that her husband was 'arrested' by a team of 'joint force' from an apartment, owned by one of their distant relatives at Uttara at about 10:10pm on that day.
However, no police station agreed to file general diary (GD) over Salahuddin's disappearance. Hasina Ahmed tried to file a complaint first with Gulshan police station and later with Uttara police station.
"I went to police stations at Gulshan and Uttara to file a GD regarding my husband. But they refused to take it, saying the complaint was baseless." Hasina Ahmed told the reporters.
Regarding Salahuddin's picking-up, she said six vehicles of law-enforcers arrived at the house at Sector-3 after 9:00 pm on Tuesday.
Two of the six vehicles blocked the adjacent road to stop traffic, and the rest four vehicles approached the building where he was staying.
"All of them were in plain clothes, and showed identity cards of DB [Detective Brach] at the entrance."
She said they asked the guard not to speak up, went straight upstairs to the apartment, and started kicking at the doors.
"As they were kicking at the doors, he [Salah Uddin] called me at about 10:08 pm and tried to inform me about the incident. Since then, he has been missing."
However, spokespersons of both RAB and DB have denied arresting or detaining Salahuddin.
Being failed to file a GD with police stations over his detention, Mrs Ahmed went to the High Court (HC) today (Thursday).
Subsequently HC has asked the government why an order would not be issued to find BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed and produce him before court. HC instructed all concerned in the government to come up with explanations by Sunday.
The bench of Justice Kamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Govinda Chandra Thakur issued a rule after hearing her petition. The petition sought an order to produce Mr Ahmed before a court within 24 hours.
BNP chairperson's advisor Khandaker Mahbub Hossain represented the plaintiff, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Thursday said his ministry is investigating the BNP leader's disappearance.
On the incident, the state minister commented that it is not clear to them whether he is abducted or still remains hidden.
He made the comments while talking to the media at a programme at Mirpur Police Staff College.
Mr Salahuddin has been purportedly issuing media statements on his party's behalf from an undisclosed location after most of the senior BNP leaders were arrested.
The former Cox's Bazar MP served as an assistant private secretary to former prime minister Khaleda Zia during her 1991-96 term, when he was a junior civil servant.
Meanwhile, BNP has demanded Mr Salahuddin's immediate release. BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan, who is staying with Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan office, claimed that the BNP leader was arrested, as he was announcing programmes on behalf of the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
"Security forces also arrested two domestic helps along with Salahuddin," he alleged.
