HC stays DNCC polls for three months

The High Court (HC) stayed on Wednesday for three months the by-polls to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral post and elections to the councilor posts in 36 new wards, reports agencies.
A two-member HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haydar and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order Wednesday morning.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the Election Commission's schedule to hold the DNCC polls will not be declared illegal.
Earlier on Tuesday, two separate writ petitions were filed with the HC seeking stay on the upcoming by-polls to the mayoral post of DNCC.
Following the petition, the same bench heard the writ and set Wednesday to deliver the verdict.
As per the schedule declared by the Election Commission, the by-polls to the DNCC mayoral post were scheduled to be held on February 26.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) Wednesday suspended all proceedings of the election to DNCC which was scheduled to be held on February 26.
"We have taken the decision following an order of the High Court (HC) that suspended all the proceedings of the DNCC election for three months," acting secretary Helaluddin Ahmed of the EC Secretariat told media Wednesday afternoon.
