HC trashes writ over Latif\\\'s JS membership

The High Court on Monday summarily dismissed the writ petition seeking a direction for vacating the parliament membership of Abdul Latif Siddique, a removed minister, now in custody in a case filed for hurting the religious feelings of Muslims, reports UNB.

Considering the matter the Election Commission's jurisdiction, an HC division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ATM Saifur Rahman, dismissed the public interest litigation (PIL) writ petition filed by Eunus Ali Akond, a lawyer.

Emerging from the court, the petitioner told reporters that he had filed the petition as the sacked minister, also expelled from Awami League on charges of hurting religious sentiments, has no political party membership.

Dhaka CMM court on November 25 sent Latif Siddique to jail after police had produced him before it in a case filed for hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims through his disparaging remarks on Islam and Tablig Jamaat.
