The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has decided not to allow any rawhide-carrying vehicle to leave the capital for three days following Eid-ul-Azha to prevent rawhide smuggling to a neighbouring country, said DMP commissioner Benazir Ahmed Sunday, report agencies.
He said strong measures will be taken to prevent illegal passage of animal skin from the capital.
"Allegation of hide-smuggling especially after the Eid day has become a regular thing nowadays. But special measures will be taken this year. Vehicles carrying skin of sacrificial animals will not be allowed to leave the capital until three days after the Eid-ul Azha. But there will be no bar in bringing the hide from other parts of the country into the capital," Benazir said. Addressing a press conference on security measures ahead of Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha, the DMP commissioner also said extensive security measures have been taken to tackle the security challenge ahead of Durga Puja and Eid festivals.
Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on October 6, when millions of animals are sacrificed across the country, including Dhaka, generating huge rawhides. And many hides are smuggled out of the country.
The DMP Commissioner said police forces will be deployed at 219 Puja Mandaps set up in the capital from September 29, the DMP commissioner told the press conference held at DMP Media Centre at city's Minto Road.
Police will keep sharp vigil on city roads as well as set up check points at important spots to ensure the security during the Eid and Puja celebrations.
They will also look after the security of the huge cattle-carrying trucks expected to enter the city ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, said Benazir.
Police forces will remain deployed round the clock at 22 cattle markets -- 21 temporary and 1 permanent ones-across the city, he added.
The DMP commissioner urged people to remain alert of dope gangs known as 'ogyan party', saying some 'ogyan party' men have become active in the capital ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.
He also urged the cattle market authorities to hang banner in front of the vehicles carrying sacrificial animals mentioning the name of the relevant markets.
"This way police will be able to guide the vehicles in reaching their destinations more appropriately," Benazir added. Police will also remain alert at important shopping centres of the city, he said.
Hides-laden vehicles won\\\'t be allowed to leave city till Oct 3
