Though the price of Hilsha has decreased by Tk 50 per kilo over the past week, the fish is still beyond the reach of the middle-income group and is being sold for up to Tk 400 per kilo, reports bdnews24.com.
Fish trader Awlad Hossain at Hatirpool Bazar said that the price of Hilsha had come down slightly over the month. Supply was adequate. Though the price of small size Hilshas decreased, the bigger ones' prices showed no downward trend as supply was comparatively lower.
Shahana Sultana Zaman, a bank official who came to buy Hilsha on the holiday, said, "Hilsha is yet beyond my reach. A one kilo fish is just enough for a day." She bought a fish for Tk 350 to satisfy her children's desire for khichuri ilish on the holiday. She had come to the market last week too, but failed to buy a fish due to the high price.
Hilsha is found aplenty during the monsoon. The government has also taken an initiative to make the national fish more available to the people by banning its export to India. But still, Hilsha is beyond the reach of the common people.
