The historic 7th March, marking the epoch-making speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed in the country on Saturday in a befitting manner, report agencies.
In his speech delivered on this day in 1971 before a mammoth rally at the historic Race Course Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) in city, Bangabandhu called upon the Bangalees to prepare for the war to liberate Bangladesh from the exploitative Pakistani regime.
In his 19-minute extempore speech before a million freedom-loving people of the then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), he made a clarion call for non-cooperation movement and asked the nation to prepare for the war of independence from the exploitative Pakistan regime.
Different socio-political organisations, including Awami League, observed the day with various programmes.
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina paid rich tributes Saturday to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at the portrait of the great leader at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi marking the historic 7th March.
Sheikh Hasina first placed a wreath as the PM at the portrait of Bangabandhu at around 7:00 in the morning. She stood there for some time in solemn silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the architect of independent Bangladesh.
Cabinet members, including Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit Sen Gupta and Parliament Members were present. Flanked by senior leaders, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, later placed another wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu.
The ruling party also held a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the afternoon where Sheikh Hasina spoke as the chief guest.
