HRC Group Chairman passes away

Sayeed Hossain Chowdhury, chairman of HRC Group, passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka, reports UNB.

His personal secretary Md. Sohel confirmed the news.

Chowdhury was the eldest son of Hedaet Hossain Chowdhury, the founder chairman of Karnaphuli Group, renowned educationist, language activist, and social worker. He was also the elder brother of Saber Hossain Chowdhury, the managing director (MD) of Karnaphuli Group and Chairman of Desh TV.

Chowdhury made significant contributions to the development of Bangladesh's tea industry. Under his leadership, HRC Group emerged as one of the country's leading tea exporters, elevating Bangladesh's profile on the international stage.

Beyond the tea industry, HRC Group has long been active in various sectors, including tourism, shipbuilding, real estate, transportation, agriculture, and food processing. The group's ventures have provided employment opportunities for thousands of people.

Chowdhury also represented Bangladesh internationally, having served as the former Honorary Consul of Bangladesh in Spain.

He maintained a highly dignified image in diplomatic circles. For a long time, he was associated with various international organisations and forums, playing a crucial role in highlighting Bangladesh's potential in business and investment.

Despite being a prominent industrialist, he consistently stood by ordinary people. His numerous initiatives in education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation garnered widespread praise. As a business leader and social worker, he received various awards and honors both at home and abroad.

Chowdhury is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter, and a host of admirers. His family members are deeply saddened by his passing.

Sayeed Hossain Chowdhury, one of the Founders and Former Chairman of ONE Bank PLC, played the role of a key figure in development of ONE Bank PLC, where he served as Chairman during two tenures (2001-2008 and 2012-2020) and as a Director in later years.

Sayeed H. Chowdhury was the Founder Chairman and CEO of HRC Group. In 1991, he established HRC Group, which grew into a major conglomerate involved in sectors like shipping, real estate, media, finance, and IT. He also held leadership roles in several organizations including the media outlet New Age, ISN Ltd., and BGIC.

He served as President of BOGSOA (Bangladesh Ocean Going Ship Owners Association). He also served as Honorary Consul of Spain in Bangladesh.

His Namaz-e-Janaza will be held today (Wednesday) after Asar prayer around 4:45 pm at Sadat Nur Mansion, 5 Paribagh, Shahbagh, Dhaka-1000.
