The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) has taken a three-phase initiative for rehabilitation of the Cyclone Sidr-affected people in coastal districts.
This was disclosed by HSBC Bangladesh Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Steve Banner at a press conference held at a city hotel Wednesday.
The multinational bank, which has already commenced its relief operation, said that it would continue providing relief materials and pursuing rehabilitation works with a budget in excess of Tk 11 million.
Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE), a local non-governmental organisation (NGO), is supporting the bank in its relief operation and other rehabilitation works.
The three-phase initiative is covering Sidr-hit districts like Borguna, Patuakhali, Perojpur and Bagerhat.
The HSBC distributed food and clothes in emergency aid among the affected people immediately after the cyclone hit the coastal districts on November 15.
The bank will provide shelters to the cyclone affected people in the districts shortly.
The HSBC CEO said that the bank would construct more than 200 'simple houses' in four or five villages and sink shallow tubewells in the areas in the next few weeks as part of its intermediate programme.
It will also implement a long-term sustainable rehabilitation programme in the districts through providing seeds, fertiliser, fishing and farming devices for the survival of the affected people who have lost winter crops, Aman paddy and a large number of domestic animals.
However, the press conference was also attended by HSBC Bangladesh Head of Marketing Mustafizur Rahman, deputy director of the CAMPE Tasneem Athar and other high officials of the bank.
