HSC, equivalent exams begin today

The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), Alim and HSC Vocational examinations-2009 begin simultaneously today (Thursday) at 1,919 centres across the country.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed restriction on public movement except examinees within 200 yards of any centre in the city to ensure a peaceful and calm atmosphere during the examination hours.
The restriction will also come into effect in all other examination centres around the country and remain effective till May 28, a DMP press release said Wednesday.
A total of 618,308 examinees from 7,237 educational institutions are sitting for the examinations under the ten education boards including Dinajpur, Madrasah and Technical Boards this year. Of the total examinees, 55.17 per cent are male and 44.83 per cent female.
Dhaka Education Board has registered the highest number of 153,398 examinees and Sylhet Board the lowest number of 14,340.
About 59,354 candidates will appear in the Alim examination under the Madrasah Education Board and 64,121 candidates under the Technical Education Board this year.
About 170 examinees will sit for examinations at five centres abroad. The centres include Jeddah, Riyadh, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Tripoli.
