SHERPUR, Sept 16 (UNB): Paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troops in a daylong drive netted a huge amount of ammunition in the jungles of Garo hill in Jhenaigati Upazila Sunday, three days after another such ammo haul in the frontier district.
BDR Sector Commander of 45 Rifles Battalion Colonel Anisuzzaman told the news agency that acting on a tip-off, they raided the hill area at about 4:00 am and found abandoned cartons stuffed with bullets.
They recovered the bullets, loaded in three pickup vans and took those to Mymensingh sector of the BDR. A number of elite-force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) teams provided backup in the operation conducted secretly.
A source in BDR said the raid would continue for few more days and details would be divulged on completion of the drive.
Local sources said the BDR troops cordoned off the entire hill range and movement of common people, excepting the law-enforcers, was controlled.
The sources quoted the BDR officials as saying that the amount of the seized ammo is huge - possibly running up to 0.10 million rounds.
"In the afternoon, BDR jawans were found loading bags full of ammunition into the pickup vans," a villager said.
Local journalists resented that they were neither allowed in BDR Nakshi camp for gathering news nor given information in this regard.
Earlier, a team of BDR arrested an indigenous youth, Russell Sangma, along with 29,100 bullets from Bakakura village in Jhenaigati Upazila on September 13.
