CHITTAGONG, Oct 18: Housing and Public Works Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain formally inaugurated the three-day-long photo exhibition of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at Chittagong Shilpakala Academy in the city today.
A total of 71 pieces have been put on display at the exhibition at the Academy Gallery. ICRC has arranged the photo exhibition titled '150 Years of Humanitarian Action' in 71 photos. Majority of the photos illustrate ICRC's humanitarian operation from 1971 to 1975. Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation M Manjur Alam addressed the function as the special guest. The function was chaired by Head of Delegation of ICRC Mrs Christine Cipolla.
The minister said the ICRC works worldwide to provide protection and assistance to people affected by conflicts and armed violence and to promote the laws that protect the victims of war.
Organisers said the ICRC carried out extensive humanitarian operation in this country during the 1971 Liberation War to alleviate the suffering of the victims. In Bangladesh, the Liberation War in 1971 had left 120,000 Bengalis stranded in Pakistan, mainly military personnel and civil servants and their families; thousands of Pakistani civilian internees and prisoners of war remained in Bangladesh.
On August 28, 1973, the governments of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh concluded an agreement in New Delhi arranging the repatriation. The ICRC repatriated 118,070 people to Bangladesh and 117,272 people to Pakistan between 1973 and 1974.
The ICRC supports the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society's efforts to provide First Aid services and medical evacuation of the injured during violence, as well as distribution of aid to affected families. It has been supporting the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) to produce custom-made artificial limbs for the people with physical disabilities.
Communication delegate Michael Kifle and communication officer Rayhan Sultana Toma were also present on the occasion.
