Women's rights defenders have urged the government to increase the budget allocation for development of women of all classes, including rural, underprivileged, tribal and landless ones.

They also said investment is a very important issue for women and girls.

Investments for rural, underprivileged, tribal and landless women cannot be cut off in any way because of weak economy, rather the allocation needs to enhance further.

The rights activists made the demands while addressing a human chain in the capital on Saturday.

The programme was jointly organised by 13 human rights and civil-society organisations on the occasion on International Women's Day. About 150 men and women from different regions of the country participated in it.

Shamsul Huda, executive director of the Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD), has said even though there are equal rights of women in the laws, policies and international laws of the state, it is not reflected in reality.

"Discriminatory laws should be changed," he said.

Sanjeeb Drong, general secretary of Bangladesh Adivasi Forum, says women are still victims of extreme discrimination, oppression and violence in Bangladesh.

Nasimun Ara Haque Minu, president of the Bangladesh Women Journalists' Centre, said that women should continue their movement until women's rights in land and agriculture and women's human rights at all levels are established.

The organisations collectively circulated leaflets outlining 19 demands for all women in the country.

The demands are: all types of land laws, policies, and regulations that discriminate against women should be abolished; rural women should be given Khas land unconditionally; in the case of widowed women, the condition of capable sons should be cancelled from the priority list of Khas land policy.
