Bangladesh Railway signed an agreement Saturday with the Indian company Toma Construction for rehabilitation of the 20km Dhaka-Narayanganj rail route at a cost of Tk 430 million (Tk 43 crore).
Under the agreement, the construction company will replace old rail-tracks, develop four stations on the way and take necessary rehabilitation initiatives to make the busy rail-route faster and more comfortable for the travellers.
Communications minister Syed Abul Hossain from the Bangladesh side and Toma Construction & Co Ltd managing director M Ataur Rahman Bhuiyan formally signed the agreement at the Rail Bhaban.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that after rehabilitation the Dhaka-Narayanganj rail route would be faster enough for commuters travelling to Dhaka in the morning and leaving in the evening.
"This will ease the traffic congestions in Dhaka to a large extent," the minister said.
He also said the ministry was considering increasing
of the number of trains on that particular route.
The managing director of Toma Construction said the rehabilitation work, which would help just double the speed on the route, would take 18 months.
"Currently, a train takes on an average 60 minutes to reach Dhaka from Narayanganj. Once we finish it, it would take only 30 minutes," he added.
