Intel chairman arrives today MoU on IT edn to be signed

Intel Corporation, one of the world's biggest producers of semiconductor, is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bangladesh government today (Tuesday) aiming to spread the IT education in country's rural areas.
The MOU, to be inked for the programme styled: The World Ahead Programme (WAP), is an initiative of the US-based IT company to invest more than $1.0 billion globally over the next five years to advance progress in four areas: accessibility, connectivity, education and content.
"We are hoping that the Intel Corporation chairman Craig R. Barrett, who arrives in the capital today (Tuesday) on his fist ever visit to Bangladesh, will sign the MoU with the Bangladesh government," one official source told the FE.
Barrett is the second high-profile IT personality to visit Bangladesh after Bill Gates of the Microsoft visited the country in December, 2005.
Intel produces microprocessors, flash memory, motherboard chipsets, network interface card and blue tooth chipsets.
Under the MoU, the source said, Intel Corporation through its WAP will provide several thousand personal computers (PCs) for educational institutions in the country.
The official source said the company will also arrange training courses for the teachers on the effective use of IT in education.
Intel's education efforts centre on improvement in teaching and learning through the effective use of technology, focusing advancement in mathematics, science and engineering education and research, he said.
Over the last year, sources said, as part of this programme Intel chairman travelled to more than 30 least developing countries including India to witness how people are benefiting from the technology.
Craig R. Barrett, also chairman of the United Nations' Global Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies, is expected to call on Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed and Science, Information and Communication Technology Adviser Tapan Chowdhury during the visit to Bangladesh.
Craig R. Barrett assumed the chairmanship of the global company in May 2005.
Previously, he served as the president of Intel Corporation starting in 1997 and its Chief Executive Officer from 1998 to 2005.
