Internet blackout sees over 50 int'l flights cancelled in Dhaka

FE REPORT | July 22, 2024 00:00:00

More than 50 international air flights to and from Dhaka were cancelled until Saturday since the nationwide Internet blackout on Thursday night, according to control room.

However, national flag-carrier Bangladesh Biman and other domestic flights operators claimed of facing no major disruption.

According to aviation sources, most of the cancelled flights were of Emirates, Air Arabia and Saudia Airlines.

All domestic and international flights, however, on Sunday were operational with some delays, according to the flight control room at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Bangladesh Biman, Airastra, Novoair and US Bangla operated all international and domestic flights on the day, but faced delay in some cases due to handling all boarding formalities manually.

Mesbaul Islam, head of marketing at Novoair, told The Financial Express that all its 10 flights operated on Sunday. However, the passenger turnout was thin.

According to flight control room, cancelled international flights on Saturday include two of Air Arabia, two of Indigo, four of Saudi Arabia, one of each Air Asia, Malindo, Thai, Zajira, Druk Air and VIstada.

On Friday, Internet blackout stopped the arrival and departure of two Emirates, one of China Stamp, Air India and Saudia flights.

Biman's Public Relations wing says the Internet disruption made their flight operations difficult, but the national flag-carrier eventually managed the sales and boarding procedures manually.

Novoair marketing Chief Mr Mesbah said they have requested their passengers to reach Dhaka airport much earlier than the schedule time for ticket purchase.

He also said demand for Dhaka-bound domestic tickets were higher in some cases as passengers were stuck in popular tourist destinations like in Cox's Bazar.

He acknowledged that the inflated demand has hiked the fare in some domestic routes.
