The number of internet subscribers in the country declined to 119.41 million in October from 119.77 million in September this year.

The total internet users, including 12.49 million ISP and PSTN subscribers, also fell to 131.89 million in October from 132.26 million in September, according to latest data released by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) secretary-general Lt Col Mohammad Zulfikar (Retd.) said the growth of mobile data usage primarily depends on the users' requirement as data-based services are becoming an integral part of the people's lives.

"As we record month-to-month usage for the last couple of years, it is evident that the growth of mobile internet users keeps fluctuating, showing both negative and positive trends," he said.

He pointed out a general trend that the number of internet subscribers fell during the year end.

However, Banglalink witnessed increased subscribers in October as the operator bagged 125,000 more internet subscribers in the month compared, Banglalink's Chief Corporate and Regulatory Affairs Officer Taimur Rahman said.

"The robust digital portfolio with innovations such as toffee, the country's largest mobile entertainment platform, and MyBL super app, has also contributed to attracting more users under its network," he said.

However, it couldn't be specified which operators lost subscribers most and which gained as the BTRC published the total number of subscribers in its monthly report.

During this period, mobile phone subscribers increased by 540,000 in October to 198.13 million from 189.67 million in September.

The second and third largest mobile operators - Robi and Banglalink -gained 340,000 and 240,000 subscribers respectively in the month.

The largest mobile operator Grameenphone and state-owned Teletalk lost subscribers in the month respectively by 30,000 and 10,000.
