Investigators in the Sharif Osman bin Hadi murder case have told a Dhaka court "sensational" information has been gleaned during interrogation from two suspects arrested in a border area, reports bdnews24.com.
Sibyoun Diu and Sanjay Chisim were produced before court on Friday after completing eight days of grilling in two phases.
The investigating officer sought their detention in jail.
Following the petition, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain ordered that the two be sent to jail.
Prosecution police Sub-Inspector Roknuzzaman confirmed the court proceedings.
In the detention plea, police said: "[Sibyoun] and [Sanjay] have given many important and sensational pieces of information regarding the incident."
Investigators, however, did not specify the nature of the information.
Inspector Faysal Ahmed of the Detective Branch's Motijheel zonal team, the investigating officer, told the court that the suspects are associates of "Philip", an active member of a human trafficking and illegal goods smuggling syndicate operating along the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh.
He said the two suspects are cousins.
According to the plea, the suspects may have used the Haluaghat border route to help accused persons flee to India through the syndicate.
"The arrested suspects are trying to avoid their involvement through various tactics," the investigating officer said. "If absconding suspects Faisal Karim Masud and his unidentified associates have fled to India, there is a strong possibility that these suspects were involved in facilitating their escape."
The Border Guard Bangladesh said Sibyoun and Sanjay were detained for questioning on the evening of Dec 15.
After interrogation, they were shown arrested in the case and produced before the court on Dec 18, when a three-day remand was granted.
Police were allowed to question them for more five days on Dec 21.
Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho, filed an attempt-to-murder case with Paltan Police on Dec 14 with the family's consent in connection with the attack on Hadi.
The murder charge under Section 302 was later added.
The other suspects arrested in the case are key suspect Faisal's father Md Humayun Kabir, mother Hasi Begum, his wife Shaheda Parvin Samia, brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Shipu, and close friend Maria Akhter Lima, associate Md Kabir, and rent-a-car businessman Md Nuruzzaman Nomani alias Uzzal and
Hadi was attacked in Bijoynagar. He was riding in a rickshaw when an assailant riding pillion on a motorcycle shot him in the head.
Gravely injured, Hadi was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was later shifted to Evercare Hospital.
He was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on Dec 15. He died while undergoing treatment there on Dec 18.
