FE Report
Janata Bank (JB), a state-owned commercial bank, will provide interest-free loans to the landless and the marginal farmers affected by cyclones Sidr and Aila and those in Monga-hit areas from December for six months.
"We will provide around Tk 5,000 -Tk 15,000 as per the requirement of the farmers of Kurigram and other Sidr, Aila and Monga affected area to discourage them from borrowing at higher rates," said Dhaka University professor and Janata Bank chairman Abul Barkat while addressing the Dissemination Seminar on Experiences and Lessons of Poverty and Working Children Project in the city yesterday.
Save the Children organised the seminar with Prof Abul Barkat in the chair while State Minister for Women Affairs Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury and Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Alauddin addressed function as chief guests.
Abul Barkat said a research agency would be picked to monitor the total lending process and it would conduct a research on the changes which would be seen among the farmers after getting the said loan compared to the other loans.
"If the plan achieves success, then in the next season the farmers will be interested to borrow money with interest and then we will go to another spot with our plan," he said.
About the child labour issue, Mr Barkat said, "Poverty is the main reason of child labour which would not be removed without poverty elimination.
He added, "Existing law of child labour should be reviewed along with the enforcement of it in view of the government vision of 2021."
