JCIAD delegation, Japan embassy minister visit Rohingya facilities at Bhasan Char

Takahashi Naoki, minister, deputy chief of mission (DCM) of the Embassy of Japan to Bangladesh, visited the Rohingya refugees at different facilities in Bhasan Char and along with a JCIAD delegation handed over school supplies.

Mr Naoki and the Japanese Commerce and Industry Association in Dhaka (JCIAD) delegation exchanged views with representatives from the Navy, UN agencies, as well as the camp-in-charge appointed by the government of Bangladesh. The visit was arranged by the UN World Food Programme (WFP).

They also visited an e-voucher outlet, a fresh food market, the integrated health and nutrition facility, the NGO production center, waste management and recycling facilities during the visit from Saturday to Tuesday, according to a press release.

Since August 2017, Japan has contributed over USD 220 million to various interventions in Cox's Bazar as well as in Bhasan Char for the Rohingya community who sought refuge in Bangladesh.

With the help of international organisations and NGOs, Japan has been providing support such as food, healthcare, WASH, shelter, protection, and assistance for gender mainstreaming.

Over 35,000 Rohingya Refugees now reside there, the press statement says.

The delegation attended a handover ceremony at a UNICEF-run school under Integrated Education Programme and WFP School Feeding Programme. The JCIAD donated school supplies there.

During the event, Mr Naoki said Japan will continue to work to resolve the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, while emphasising on raising awareness among the international community.
