Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) said Sunday that Jihad, the minor, died from drowning after fall into a deep well in the capital.

The head of DMCH forensic department, Dr Habibuzzaman, disclosed the finding after autopsy of the body of the three-and-a-half-year-old boy, who was buried on Sunday afternoon in his Shariatpur village after a mass funeral.

"The death is due to drowning. We performed tests and ascertained that Jihad had all symptoms of drowning," he told the media at a press briefing at the hospital -- as many questions stirred many minds about the tragedy.

"Jihad had marks on his head. But he drowned before the head injury could prove fatal," the physician added.

He said the minor boy survived more than 250 feet deep into the well for about an hour after he had fallen into the abandoned well at Shajahanpur Railway Colony around 3:00 pm Friday.

Jihad fell into the nearly six-hundred-foot-deep abandoned well of 17-inch diameter while playing with his friends. Locals said the well had been abandoned for over last one year.

His friends informed his parents about the fall. Subsequently, a Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) team rushed in and started rescue operation at 4:00 pm.
