The jubilant students and teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) went into raptures as they celebrated the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime on the campus on Monday afternoon.
The atmosphere was filled with euphoria as they cheered the moment and distributed sweets to participants to mark what they saw as a great victory in their struggle for a democratic change and the establishment of a just society.
Ahsan Labib, the JU coordinator of the student movement, said, "We fought in 1971 to build a beautiful Bangladesh, but our goal of an egalitarian Bangladesh was never fulfilled. Instead, we saw the establishment of Bakshal and tyranny. So, we've fought another liberation war in 2024."
"This new Bangladesh will be a democratic state where everyone will have freedom of speech, basic human rights and freedom of expression. People will move without fear of any killing, disappearance, attack or fake lawsuit."
Labib expressed his gratitude to JU teachers, students and staffers, saying, "Thank you for responding to our call, first for the quota-reform movement and now for playing a role in the downfall of this dictatorship."
"We also remember the martyrs and the injured in this movement," he said.
Earlier in the day, thousands of students marched towards Dhaka, demanding the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government. Their march began from the JU Shaheed Minar at noon.
Around 5,000 people from neighbouring Savar and Ashulia areas along with thousands of JU teachers and students braved the elements to join the march.
