Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Tuesday suspended nine teachers and 289 Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL)-linked students over attacks on the protesting students of the July uprising from July 14 to 17 last year.
The decision was made based on the recommendations of a fact-finding committee and approved by the university's highest policy-making body -- the Syndicate.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Kamrul Ahsan announced the decision early Tuesday morning after a 16-hour closed-door Syndicate meeting that began at 11 am on Monday and ended at 3 am on Tuesday at the university's administrative building.
The suspended students will face penalties based on their academic status-- former students will have their certificates suspended, those who have completed exams and vivas will have their results withheld, current students will face expulsion.
The suspended teachers are: former Pro-VC (Academic) Professor Dr. Mohammed Mostafa Feeroz, former Proctor Professor Dr. Alamgir Kabir, Associate Professor of Government and Politics ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan, former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Bashir Ahmed, former Provost of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Professor Esrafil Ahmed, Associate Professor of Geography and Environment Mehedi Iqbal, Professor of History Hosne Ara, former Provost of Rabindranath Tagore Hall Nazmul Hasan Talukder, and Professor of Public Health and Informatics Mohammad Tajuddin Sikder.
10 More Teachers Accused of Abetting Attacks
Additionally, preliminary investigations revealed evidence of involvement from 10 more teachers accused of aiding the attacks.
To gather more detailed information, six faculty-based structural committees have been formed. The accused teachers under these committees include Kanon Kumar Sen, Palash Saha, Shafi Mohammad Tareq, Jahirul Islam Khandaker, Md. Jahangir Alam, Monir Uddin Sikder, Sayadur Rahman, Md. Anowar Khasru Parvez, Muhibur Rouf Shaibal, and AA Mamun.
Two officers-Nahidur Rahman Khan and Rajib Chakraborty-and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall attendant Mohsin have also been suspended.
The pension benefits of former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Nurul Alam and former Registrar Abu Hasan have been canceled due to their alleged involvement in aiding police attacks on students. Responding to long-standing student demands, the university has decided to rename various establishments previously named after the Sheikh dynasty. A committee will be formed to propose new names for Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, Sheikh Hasina Hall, and Sheikh Russell Hall.
