Jute mill workers, employees stage demo for arrears, bonus in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, Oct 6 (UNB): About 4,500 workers and employees of state-owned UMC Jute Mills here today staged demonstration demanding payment of their arrears and Eid bonus.
They stopped work at 2.00pm, brought out a procession and gheraoed the general manager in the guesthouse. They allegedly assaulted the deputy general manager (finance) and confined him in his office.
Senior officials of the administration rushed to the spot and assuaged the angry workers with assurance to meet their demands. Wages of workers remained unpaid for nine weeks and officers and employees for five months.
