The International Crisis Group (ICG) in its latest bulletin said that Bangladesh's political tension may worsen further if the country's security forces arrest BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia following issuance of arrest warrant against her.
The Brussels-based group in its monthly bulletin said it drew attention to the arrest warrant issued by a Dhaka court and if the warrant is executed, it could seriously escalate the political crisis that has seen over 100 people killed in anti-government protests since early January.
"The crisis could gravely destabilise the country unless both the government and the BNP move urgently to reduce tensions (as explained in our new report)," the ICG said in its monthly conflict situation report called CrisisWatch released on March 2, 2015.
It also put Bangladesh alongside crisis-stricken Middle East country of Yemen in its conflict risk alert category and said in Bangladesh political violence threatens to further destabilise the country.
Risk Alert is given for a country where violence has been occurring and is expected to continue in the coming months: such an indicator is given only where new or significantly escalated violence is feared.
