Kitchen markets bear the brunt as anti-quota protest disrupts supply chain

Vegetable prices witnessed a further hike last week amid the widespread anti-quota clashes and countrywide shutdown.

Tomato witnessed Tk 40-60 a kg hike and was at Tk 200-240 a kg in retail on Friday. Green chilli prices were Tk 300-360 a kg in retail, marking another round of hike in a week by Tk 50-60 a kg.

Bottled gourd showed a Tk 20-30 per piece hike as it was being retailed at Tk 90-120 per piece.

Eddo, long-yard beans, brinjal were at Tk 90-120 a kg.

Bitter gourd was being retailed at Tk 120-140 a kg while pointed gourd, snake gourd, green papaya remained static at Tk 60-80 a kg, according to kitchen market sources.

Traders said countrywide shutdown caused supply disruption of chilli, vegetables and other perishable items, pushing the already high prices up further.

However, eggs, onion and potato prices remained static at Tk 155-160, Tk 120 and Tk 60-70 a kg, respectively.

Fish prices skyrocketed amid supply crunch as hilsa was at Tk 1600-2,850 a kg, marking Tk200-400 per kg hike further.

Shoul price jumped to Tk 700-1,050 a kg, while ruhi was at Tk 650-1200 a kg based on size.

Black tiger shrimp and golda shrimp were being retailed in between Tk 750 and Tk 1350 a kg, marking Tk 100 a kg further hike.
