CHATTOGRAM, Mar 12: A Bangladeshi flag carrier ship has been captured by pirates in the Indian Ocean on its way to the United Arab Emirates with coal from the African country of Mozambique.
The ship MV Abdullah is owned by SR Shipping, a concern of reputed business group of the country KSRM Group. There were 23 Bangladeshi sailors aboard that ship. All 23 seamen were taken hostage by the pirates. The name of the captain of MV Abdullah is Captain Abdur Rashid.
A message was sent from the ship to the owner on Tuesday around 1:30 pm Bangladesh time. However, in the message the pirates said the 23 sailors of the ship were safe.
Officials of KSRM and SR Shipping Limited said that around 100 pirates had taken control of the ship on the Indian sea, about 450 nautical miles from Somalia.
Meherul Karim, Chief Executive Officer of KSRM Group and chief of the SR Shipping, told The Financial Express that the pirates took control of the ship when it was going to the United Arab Emirates with coal from the African country of Mozambique on Tuesday.
The other seamen are Chief Officer Mohammad Atik Ullah Khan, Second Officer Mazharul Islam Chowdhury, Third Officer Md. Tarekul Islam, Chief Engineer ASM Saiduzzaman, Second Engineer Md. Taufiqul Islam, Third Engineer Rokan Uddin, Fourth Engineer Tanveer Ahmed, Deck Cadet Md Sabbir Hossain, Engine Cadet Ayub Khan, Electrician Ibrahim Khalil Ullah, seamen Md. Anwarul Haque, Md. Asifur Rahman, Sajjad Hossain, Joy Mahmud, Md Nazmul Haque, Ainul Haque, Oiler Mohammad Shamsuddin, Md Ali Hossain, Fireman Mosharraf Hossain Shakeel, Chief Cook Md. Shafiqul Islam, Md. Noor Uddin and Fitter Md. Saleh Ahmed.
The ship MV Abdullah was built in 2016. It is 190 metres long. The ship, first named 'Golden Hawk', was renamed MV Abdullah after the change of ownership.
