Launch operation on all routes suspended

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) suspended on Friday launch operation on all routes across the country due to adverse weather under the impact of cyclonic storm Midhili.

Earlier cyclone Midhili crossed the coastal line of the country on the day (Friday).

A high official at BIWTA told the FE that they had suspended launch operation considering safety and security of the passengers due to the storm.

Visiting Dhaka River Port Terminal at Sadarghat in the capital in the afternoon, the FE correspondent found that no launch was operating since morning.

A staff member of a Barishal-bound launch told the FE that some passengers had come at the terminal in the morning but they left seeing the launch services suspended.

An official at the river port terminal told the FE that launch services remained stopped since morning.

He said they suspended all launch services considering safety and security of the passengers after the cautionary signal number 2 was raised at all river ports in the country.

Launch operation will remain suspended until further notice, he continued.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Enamur Rahman after a meeting on the preparedness for cyclone Midhili on Thursday at Bangladesh Secretariat told the media that the cyclone was supposed to hit the coastal areas of Barguna, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Bhola, Noakhali, Laximpur, Feni, Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat and Chattogram.
