The interim government has appointed a lawyer to free 57 Bangladeshi expatriates who were detained for staging demonstrations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in support of the anti-quota student movement in Bangladesh.

The UAE government jailed 57 Bangladeshis for their protests in Dubai in support of the movement that flared up in the first week of July.

This information was confirmed through a notice signed by Bangladesh mission's deputy chief Mohammad Mizanur Rahman in the UAE on Monday.

Dubai-based Bangladeshi lawyer Olora Afrin has been appointed to provide legal support to the Bangladeshi expatriates, it said.

On July 20, the Dubai law enforcers arrested 57 Bangladeshi workers for their protests against the discriminatory quota in government jobs in Bangladesh.

Three Bangladeshi workers have been sentenced to life in prison, 53 to 10 years, and one to 11 years.
