Low-pressure in gas supply will 'go within 2010'

Low pressure problem in gas supply that has been severely hampering operation of industries and power plants across the country will go within next one and a half year, hopes the Petrobangla officials, reports UNB.
The problem will be overcome by installing a big gas compressor station in Sylhet region. The installation work will be completed in 18 months.
The US-based gas field operator Chevron will install the station at Mochair in Sylhet for Petrobangla. This compressor will significantly improve the pressure in certain areas in gas transmission and distribution network in the country.
For the last two years, drop in pressure in gas supply has been a major problem for different industries as well as power plants.
Many industries and power plants in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Sylhet, Baghabari and Chittagong allege that pressure in gas supply is not adequate. Production has come down to half in many of the industrial units.
Petrobangla attempted to install three gas compressors but failed to implement the projects due to paucity of funds. Chevron will install the compressor from its own fund and recover the costs gradually.
But industrial sources said that it was unfair and questioned its legal coverage within production sharing contract (PSC).
Refuting the allegation, Petrobangla ascertained the deal was absolutely in accordance with the PSC. It said installation of compressor is urgently needed to raise gas supply.
